Liepaja Fortifications

Liepaja fortress is a fortification complex around the entire town of Liepaja, built at the turn of the 19th century. The Tsar of Russia gave the order to build this Fortress in order to protect Liepaja from the German Empire. Liepaja fortress was designed as a system of separate fortifications or forts that surrounded the whole town.

Some of Liepaja fortifications are available for visitors, for example Redan and Northern Forts. They are located in Karosta, in the northern part of Liepaja. The Northern Forts are partially collapsed into the sea and visiting this place can be dangerous. We recommend visiting Redan for exploring the fortifications.
